Perfection in Hamburger Form
Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage, one of the most classic and popular burger restaurants, is located in Cambridge, next to Harvard University.
The restaurant opened in 1960 and is still a family business, the owners (Bartley family) have no intention of turning it into a franchise or anything like that, it has become one of the most visited restaurants, not only the university is next to the students, but also tourists and all lovers of a good burger because they are always on the lists of "Best Hamburgers in Boston".
We stopped at Mr. Bartley's around 11 o'clock after walking around the Harvard campus and neighborhood. Evidently it was not rush hour because it was not even the typical American lunch time and it was very noticeable because the small patio of the place was quite empty but we decided to stay and make the most of being there, we were right because even though there were people inside, plenty of free space, but after 15 minutes people started coming in and did not stop until the place was full of people asking for burgers and more burgers. The place is not very big so it fills up fast but they make good use of the space as they have long tables in the central area so you may have to eat your burger next to strangers but that is not a problem. The decor is quirky, with lots of collectibles and a distinctive Elvis style (you can tell the owner is a big Elvis fan), once the waiters have written down your order, they shout to the kitchen, leaving paper time. Then, when the page turns, it gets noisy but fun.
One of the first things that caught my attention was that they had a wide variety of burgers (I counted about 30) with strange names related to popular people in the United States and other popular things because the burgers were on the iPhone or Facebook, although the name changes because celebrities are not always that important, the ingredient remains, even if it is a different name.
Each burger uses 7 ounces of meat that is ground daily on site, hand formed on site and then grilled. When you try it it's very clear to you, because the burgers are juicy, the meat itself is very good, and the doneness is worked to perfection, which is a pleasure.
When it comes to ordering drinks, they also have natural lemonade and milkshakes, which are very popular with many people because the burgers are served with thick milkshakes. Of course, they also have starters, salads, sandwiches, wraps... a very complete menu, really. Just out of curiosity, you don't pay at the table, but they have a cash register at the entrance, where you only go and pay when you are full.
And they only accept cash, so make sure you have change. So if you're passing through Boston and visiting Harvard, don't stop for a burger at Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage, you won't regret it.
