Valencia and its Charm
The first thing to do in Valencia is a must for us is a free tour. We always do it the first day we spend in a city and this time it was a success. Our guide Pau was totally amazing, we recommend it 100%.
Visit the City of Arts and Sciences. This may be the place that comes to mind when we think of Valencia, and the truth is that it is amazing. But it is also true that it was not the first thing we saw. We left it for the last day and dedicated a whole morning to it (it could have been much more too).
Go back to your earliest childhood in Gulliver Park. The park is so called because it is precisely the "giant" Gulliver who, lying down, forms with his body a lot of slides that you can throw yourself down. We think it is one of the best playgrounds in history, we had a great time!
Take a walk through the Turia Gardens. This green space occupies the old riverbed of the river, which was diverted after the Great Flood of Valencia in 1957.
One of the things to do in Valencia that you can not miss is to enter the Lonja de la Seda. On Sundays it is free, so it can be a great day to stay with your mouth open inside, the rest of the days it costs 2 €.
Visit the impressive towers of Serranos and Quart. If you can climb one of them, we did it to the Serranos tower and it has very cool views of the city.
Don't miss the Cathedral of Valencia, between Plaza de la Virgen and Plaza de la Reina. Here you can see what is possibly the Holy Grail, although in Leon they say it is there.
Climb the "Miguelete", the most famous and beloved tower of the cathedral of Valencia.
One of the things to do in Valencia that surprised us the most was the possibility of being able to attend a session of the Tribunal de las Aguas.
Enjoy the squares of the city, apart from the famous "de la Reina" and "de la Virgen", the whole historic center is full of small squares where you can enjoy a good terrace. Don't forget to take a look at the famous "Plaza Redonda".
Another square you can't miss is the Town Hall square. When we went there were concerts and they had put a lot of chairs and wooden bleachers to enjoy the atmosphere. We don't know if it is always like this, but it seems to us that it is an area of enjoyment.
The vaults of the church of San Nicolás de Bari will leave you open-mouthed. A real pass and one of the things to do in Valencia that you should write down in red.
Get lost in the Barrio del Carmen, one of the most charming neighborhoods in the old town. In addition, in this neighborhood you will see a lot of graffiti, in fact, here you can book a free tour to not miss any.
Visit the Centro de Cultura Contemporánea del Carmen. It doesn't matter if you don't like contemporary art, because the place where it is is already incredible. This center occupies the former Royal Monastery of Our Lady of Carmen of Valencia, founded in the thirteenth century. And the best thing is that it's FREE.
Enjoy the Central Market of Valencia where in about 400 stalls you can find the best of the Valencian orchard. It is open until 15:00 and it is best to go on a day when there are not too many tourists.
You can't miss the Mercado Colón. This market full of gastrobars and restaurants is perfect for a snack or a drink before continuing to know the outside walls of the city.
Apart from eating paella, another of the things to do in Valencia, at least once, is to try the horchata and if it is with fartons, much better. The oldest place in the city to have horchata is Santa Catalina, but it is also the most crowded. We opted for the second oldest, El Collado, in the square of the same name.
Enjoy the good weather in Valencia at the Malvarrosa beach.
One of the things that surprised us the most is the amount of people cycling around the city. If you have the opportunity to take a bike tour, don't miss it. We think it is a different way to see the city.
Take a picture with the narrowest facade in Europe. In fact, it used to be the narrowest building, but it was bought by the local next door and they knocked down the partition wall.
